Tyre Size Explained: What the Numbers on Your Tyre Mean

That string of numbers and letters on your tyre sidewall isn't random - it tells you exactly what your car is designed to run. Here's how to read it, in plain English.

Where to find your tyre size

  • On the tyre sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V
  • On a sticker in the driver's door shut or inside the fuel flap
  • In your vehicle handbook
  • By your number plate, using an online tyre lookup

How to read your tyre size

Take a typical example - 205/55 R16 91V. Each part means something:

  1. 205 - the tyre width in millimetres
  2. 55 - the aspect ratio: the sidewall height as a percentage of the width
  3. R - radial construction (almost all modern car tyres)
  4. 16 - the wheel (rim) diameter in inches
  5. 91 - the load index: the maximum weight the tyre can carry
  6. V - the speed rating: the maximum speed the tyre is rated for

Load index and speed rating - why they matter

The load index and speed rating aren't optional extras. Your car is designed for tyres rated to carry its weight and cope with its performance, so it's important to fit tyres that meet - or exceed - the ratings specified for your vehicle. Fitting a lower rating can be unsafe and can affect your insurance.

How to find your tyre size by reg

If you'd rather not crawl around the car, most online tyre tools let you enter your number plate to find the correct size. The most reliable references are the sidewall itself and the sticker in the driver's door shut, as they show exactly what the manufacturer specified.

Do all four tyres need to be the same size?

As a rule, tyres should match across each axle, and ideally across the whole car, for balanced handling. Some performance cars use a "staggered" setup with different sizes front and rear - if in doubt, check the door sticker or just ask us.

“You don't need to memorise any of it - just send us your reg when you ask for a quote and we'll pull the exact size. But it's worth knowing where to look, because that little code tells you precisely what your car's designed to run.”

Frequently asked questions

What do the numbers on my tyre mean?

They show the tyre's width (mm), aspect ratio (%), construction, rim diameter (inches), load index and speed rating - for example 205/55 R16 91V.

How do I find my tyre size?

Check the tyre sidewall, the sticker in the driver's door shut, your handbook, or use an online lookup with your number plate.

Can I fit a different tyre size to my car?

Stick to the sizes and load/speed ratings your manufacturer specifies. Changing size or fitting a lower rating can be unsafe and may affect insurance.

What does the speed rating letter mean?

It's the maximum speed the tyre is designed for. Always fit tyres that meet or exceed your vehicle's specified rating.
